Five Reasons Why I Am Still Unemployed

In Monsieur Oghenetega’s office, during Mrs. Eguono’s tearful plea for a job, I witnessed a moment that cut to the heart of why some remain unemployed despite their qualifications. Her disheveled appearance and lack of confidence reminded me of David Diop’s poetic imagery of loss and desperation. But this wasn’t about her academic prowess or work experience—it was about missing the vital details that separate candidates who get hired from those who don’t. It wasn’t just her CV; it was her presentation, her readiness, her understanding of the process.

Could it be that we’re all missing similar key steps in our job hunt? Are we, like Mrs. Eguono, overlooking what truly matters? Let’s uncover the five reasons you might still be unemployed—and how to fix them. In this insightful article, discover five key reasons why you might still be unemployed despite your qualifications—and how to turn things around.

Did you know that your CV fails the 6-second test? Recruiters spend an average of just six seconds skimming through CVs. If yours doesn’t immediately stand out, it’s heading straight for the rejection pile. Your CV should be sharp, targeted, and rich with action-oriented language that demonstrates your value. Are you ready to make those six seconds count? Remember that Your CV is a marketing document, not a historical record.

Have you ever considered how your online presence impacts your job hunt? Employers are watching—and 70% of them check out your social media before making a decision. Is your digital footprint sending the wrong message? Clean it up and start curating your professional brand on platforms like LinkedIn. Because after all, a polished profile can open more doors than you might expect! How about we ponder on this quote: “Your online presence is like a well-dressed resume; it should look good, but the real substance is what’s underneath.”

What if I told you that networking accounts for 85% of job opportunities? 90% of people agree with Porter Gale when he opined that “Your network is your net worth.” It’s not always what you know, but who you know. Connections open doors, but are you making the right ones? Attend events, join professional groups, and lean on mentors. Every conversation could be your next opportunity. As Warren Buffet once said, “Opportunities come infrequently. When it rains gold, put out the bucket, not the thimble.

Let’s talk interview: First impressions are everything, and employers often make up their minds within the first 90 seconds of an interview. Are your skills polished enough to survive that make-or-break moment? Preparation is key. Research the company, practice your responses, and don’t forget to ask questions that reflect your enthusiasm and understanding of the role. What are you doing to ensure your performance doesn’t fizzle under pressure? “Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.”— Bobby Unseld

Finally, have you overlooked the power of self-care during your job hunt? Job hunting is exhausting, and it’s easy to lose sight of yourself in the process. But did you know that burnout can affect your energy and focus? Taking care of your mental and physical health is just as critical as tweaking your CV. A strong mind equals a strong candidate.

Now that we’ve explored these obstacles, are you ready to take the next step toward your dream job? As Ope Bankole said, “Job hunting is like a task; knowing what to do brings results.”

  1. The last reason is often over looked. Your health can run you dry leaving you empty and dry. It is good to care of your health while job hunting.

  2. First impressions are everything, and employers often make up their minds within the first 90 seconds of an interview. This is so true because there is no second time for a first impression.

  3. We definitely can’t outplay the importance of having good CV. It’s almost like out passport to securing jobs.

      1. You C.V required so much and one thing with jobs is one available position may be as a content creator but with so much multitasking e.g content writing, video shooting, video editor, graphics designer, animation, presentation, web designing and Coding and the worse part is brain storming or master mind all in one position and they expect you to be just like asap rockey on it just like that imagine 🙄

  4. It just strikes me that I might leave the earth without knowing what it reality it is to look for a job. Now, I’m thinking, I should put myself out there, just to have a feel.
